HAZOP

A HAZOP is a structured, critical examination of a plant or a system, undertaken by a representable team including the design disciplines and operational staff. The purpose is to identify deviations from an intended design, along with their consequences to safety and operability. The HAZOP method is a standard feature in the process industry as well as in the oil and gas industry. Scandpower has extensive experience leading HAZOPs.

What if….. ?
What can go wrong, and how?

Most approaches to safe design rely on application of codes of practice and design based upon experience from specialists and operators in the industry. Such methods will, however, only take into account problems that have already happened.

With introduction of new technology, unconventional design, complex plants and short operating experience, a HAZOP can be a useful tool to identify potential hazards and operability problems.

HAZOPs can be used for new plants and for modifications to existing design. While the method has been developed primarily for the process industry (and has been applied in great scale in the oil and gas sector), use of the guide word HAZOP approach has been applied with success for critical operations (i.e. lifting, drilling, start-up of plants etc.) and for working environment studies.

Scandpower has more than 20 years experience performing HAZOPs, and has a team of experienced HAZOP leaders that are able to help clients organizing and performing the HAZOP, as well as preparing the follow-up activities after a HAZOP.
